In Nothing More to Tell by Karen M. McManus, Brynn Gallagher returns to her hometown after an incident at her old school and begins investigating the unsolved murder of her favorite teacher, Mr. Larkin, after pitching the idea to her supervisor at her true-crime internship, Motive. Particularly, Mr. Larkin’s body was discovered by three students at Saint Ambrose School in the nearby woods while completing a leaf project, one of whom was Brynn’s former best friend, Noah (Tripp) Talbot. However, Tripp gave a false account to the police that indirectly cleared the other two—Charlotte Holbrook and Shane Delgado—due to fearing his father might be involved after witnessing an argument between him and Mr. Larkin earlier that day. Determined to uncover the truth about what truly happened in the woods, Brynn ironically uncovers shocking secrets about Mr. Larkin’s past. Yet, the more she learns, the more she realizes that the murderer might still be closer than anyone thinks.

Specifically, in Nothing More to Tell, the story is told from alternating points of view between Tripp and Brynn. This structure allows readers to see both characters' inner thoughts and perspectives on the events surrounding their teacher's murder. As Brynn digs into the past to uncover the truth, Tripp’s point of view reveals the guilt he carries from the lie he told years ago. Over time, their shared experiences revolving around this trauma and Tripp’s previous childhood crush on Brynn bring them closer together, and by the end of the novel, (SPOILER) they become a couple.

For example, after Tripp experiences a fallout with his father and added-up emotional distress due to bottling up the secret about what happened in the woods for so long, he drinks excessively in Charlotte’s guesthouse. Yet, Brynn finds him and attempts to comfort his drunk self: “He drops his head into both heads and falls silent for a long minute. I’m about to ask again when he looks up and says ‘Swear you won’t tell?’ I cross my heart. ‘I promise’” (McManus 219). Bonding over the trauma Tripp has experienced here has allowed for a much-needed breakthrough in communication between Brynn and Tripp, strengthening their relationship and initiating the “baby steps” to becoming a couple. By sharing this vulnerable moment, Tripp is opening up to Brynn, and in turn, Brynn is able to offer him the support and understanding he needs. As a hopeless romantic, I found the connection of the story’s POV to Brynn and Tripp’s relationship quite noteworthy. The alternating POVs make the development of their relationship feel more authentic, allowing readers to witness the bond they rebuild and the emotional growth they both experience throughout the story in moments similar to the example provided.

Beyond their noteworthy relationship, the novel’s alternating POV also allows readers to learn more about the investigation than Brynn does, especially through Tripp’s perspective. For example, on page 97, Brynn thinks to herself, “What do you know, Tripp? And what did you do?” (McManus). However, readers already know Tripp’s backstory and how he lied to the police to protect his father, which made me constantly wonder when Brynn would discover this truth as I continued reading. Thus, the alternating POV not only connects to their relationship but also heightens the mystery of the overall novel, adding suspense to Brynn and Tripp’s interactions. I often found myself wondering, "What will happen once Brynn finds out? Will they become enemies again?" This uncertainty kept me hooked and eager to see how their relationship as well as Brynn’s investigation would unfold once all the secrets came to light.

In sum, the story’s engagement and connection to the characters, driven by the POV, made this particular element of the novel stand out to me. By offering insight into both Brynn and Tripp’s inner thoughts, the structure not only deepened their emotional journeys but also heightened the suspense, making the mystery of Mr. Larkin’s murder even more compelling. The alternating perspectives allowed readers to witness the characters’ growth, their changing feelings toward one another, and the gradual unveiling of secrets too. Lastly, to end my blog post, I would like to mention the following: I thoroughly enjoyed Nothing More to Tell and re-read it over Thanksgiving break after initially reading it during the summer before freshman year. I found the story to be quite compelling and engaging from start to finish. If you enjoy suspenseful mysteries with intricate character development and unexpected twists, this book is definitely worth reading. Thank you!
