Can a video game be considered art? I would say yes, while there are many studies saying that video games rots people's brains, there are many video games out there with powerful meanings. There are many genres of video games, story games are usually the ones used to deliver a message, but there are some games just used to distract the mind. However, this does not mean simple games aren’t art, even the simplest video games are art.
According to The Britannica Dictionary, the definition of art is “something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings”(“Art”). Notice how it says something? This is because a lot of things can be considered art, even non physical things, like music. The creation of video games is something that needs imagination as the ideas for video games come from the creativity of one's brain. Skill is also something needed to create a video game because they cannot be created upon thin air.
In the 2011 supreme court case, Brown v. Entertainments Merchants Association, the court ruled that video games are protected under the 1st amendment of free speech. Justice Anotonia Scalia said “Like the protected books, plays, and movies that preceded them, video games communicate ideas—and even social messages—through many familiar literary devices (such as characters, dialogue, plot, and music) and through features distinctive to the medium”(Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association). Like Justice Justice Antonia said, video games provide meaningful messages like other forms of art.
Art is something that has a very loose meaning, the only things required to make it is the imagination and creativity of the brain. A simple game of pong is art, the most complex games are art. Games that convey a message, games that are only used to pass the time. They are all art, because art is an open term. The only limit to art is the limit of an organism's brain.
